Inspiration in Education nominee – Nicola Stanway

Nicola Stanway leads Caudwell Children’s Shaping Futures Programme, a pioneering initiative that empowers neurodivergent young people aged 16 to 25 to unlock their potential and take their next steps in life with confidence and purpose.

Over the last 12 months Nicola has built the programme from the ground up, transforming it from an idea into a movement of change that is already delivering life-changing results.

She has been nominated in the Inspiration in Education category of the Your Heroes Awards by colleagues Clare Wherton and Tom Sherratt.

They said: “Nicola’s passion, determination and unwavering belief in young people have inspired learners, families and communities, making her a truly deserving recipient of this award.

“For many neurodivergent young people, the transition from education into adulthood can be filled with barriers. Despite having the skills, talents and passions to succeed they often face challenges in accessing further education, work opportunities and supportive environments that understand their needs.

“This gap leaves too many young people at risk of being overlooked, isolated or unable to fulfil their true potential.

“Recognising this, Nicola identified a vital need for a programme that not only supported young people in gaining employability and life skills but also focused on confidence, aspiration and empowerment.

“She believed in creating an initiative that placed neurodivergent young people at the centre, valuing their individuality and aligning opportunities with their passions.”

Twelve months ago, such a programme did not exist. Today, because of Nicola’s drive and vision, the Shaping Futures Education and Employability programme is equipping learners with the essential skills needed to thrive in the next stage of their lives, whether it’s securing a job, gaining work experience or stepping into volunteering.

Through engaging and interactive employability and life skills sessions the programme provides practical tools and techniques designed to boost confidence, opening doors to a brighter future, ensuring every young person is ready to step forward with self-assurance and success.

In the year to date the programme has seen 178 leaners engage with the programme with 100% success rate of learners who have completed the programme in the past 12 months moving into a positive destination. This includes returning to education, gaining employment, securing volunteering roles or taking up work experience placements that align with their personal interests and ambitions.

The programme is shaped around the young people themselves, listening to their voices, understanding their challenges, maximising their opportunities and celebrating their individuality along with making social connections.

Beyond the numbers are the stories of transformation. Young people who once doubted their abilities now approach the future with confidence and resilience. Families who worried about opportunities for their children now celebrate their achievements.

The programme has also brought together business leaders whose Employees have seen the strengths and talents of neurodivergent individuals in action, helping to break down barriers in the wider community.

Nicola has also inspired her team, colleagues, programme partners and businesses to unlock potential for neurodivergent young people through the programme ensuring all learners are able to develop and reach their full potential.

Tom and Clare added: “Nicola embodies the qualities of an inspirational education leader who has demonstrated how education can inspire, empower and transform lives through the Shaping Futures Programme.

“Without Nicola’s passion and determination, the Shaping Futures Programme would not exist. Her ability to inspire others and her relentless belief in the potential of neurodivergent young people has been the foundation of its remarkable success.

“She is not only shaping futures for young people but also shaping a more inclusive and understanding community championing the awareness and success of neurodivergent young people throughout education.

“Nicola truly embodies the spirit of the Inspiration of Education Award and is a shining example of the difference that one person’s passion and vision can make.”

Nicola has worked for Caidwell Children for around two years and is the charity’s Employability Manager and Safeguarding Lead.
