Community Group of the Year nomination – Haughton village
For the past 30 years residents of a village in Staffordshire have shown extraordinary dedication to supporting Midlands Air Ambulance Charity and other vital local causes.
The amazing efforts of Haughton, near Stafford, began in the early 1990s when local resident Robert Swinnerton was airlifted by the charity following a serious incident. Grateful for the lifesaving care he received, Robert was inspired to give back — and what he and his fellow villagers have achieved since is nothing short of remarkable.
Every Christmas the entire village transforms into a festive wonderland. Streets are adorned with twinkling lights, colourful decorations and cheerful displays that draw families from across Staffordshire and beyond. This annual tradition has become a much-anticipated event, bringing joy to visitors and fostering a strong sense of togetherness among residents.
But the magic of Haughton’s Christmas lights goes far beyond festive cheer. The initiative is rooted in generosity and community spirit, raising funds for three important charities that serve the needs of the people of Staffordshire: Katherine House Hospice, Stoke Hospital Cancer Trust and Midlands Air Ambulance Charity. Through donations collected during the seasonal displays, the village has raised £30,500 to date — testament to their compassion and commitment.
The fundraising effort is entirely community-led, with residents volunteering their time and resources to make each year’s display bigger and brighter than the last. It’s a shining example of how one person’s gratitude can spark a movement and how a small village can make a big impact and help save lives.
Their continued support not only helps fund Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s vital service but also strengthens the bonds between neighbours. As the lights go up each December they illuminate more than just the streets — they shine a light on the power of community and the spirit of giving.
Midlands Air Ambulance Charity had nominated Haughton village in the Community Group of the Year category of the Your Heroes Awards.
