Inspiration in Education nominee – Dr Karen Castle
An academic professional based at University of Staffordshire is helping military learners to transform their lives.
Dr Karen Castle is in her fifth year at the University after two decades working in education, this after starting her career in the prison service.
She is the Senior Lecturer in Leadership and Management in the School for Digital, Technology, Innovation and Business and the Course Lead for the CMDA (Ministry of Defence programme).
In her role at the University Karen has established a Gurkha Learning Network to support Nepalese apprentices on the CMDA to help them understand the UK learning culture and academic expectations. This year she has proudly supported six Gurkha students through graduation and is currently guiding 19 others through their studies.
Karen is hugely respected by her students and is known for going above and beyond to support them – she has even learnt the Nepalese language to connect more effectively and inclusively. She says it is “part of my job” but her commitment often extends far beyond normal expectations.
Examples include creating a LinkedIn support network for military apprentices and developing a resettlement alumni group, whilst Karen’s pastoral and holistic support extends to CV writing, personal statements and mock interviews, sharing learning resources, articles and offering career advice.
To accommodate students deployed worldwide, Karen even delivers mentoring sessions during the evening and early mornings ensuring they are never disadvantaged.
Through compassion, cultural awareness and relentless dedication, Karen has created an inclusive learning community that empowers military personnel to achieve their full potential, both in higher education and in life beyond the Armed Forces.
Students reflecting on their learning journey have said about Karen: “If it was not for her care and support, many of the military students would not have been able to continue with their CMDA” and “Karen showed genuine understanding and care for all members of the cohort. It made everyone feel valued….she really cares about our education.”
Dr Karen Castle has been nominated in the Inspiration in Education category of the Your Heroes Awards.
